Godparent/Sponsor

Requirements to be a Godparent

According to the Code of Canon Law, 872-874

Can. 872 - Insofar as possible, a person to be baptized is to be given a sponsor who assists an adult in Christian initiation or together with the parents presents an infant for baptism. A sponsor also helps the baptized person to lead a Christian life in keeping with baptism and to fulfill faithfully the obligations inherent in it.

Can. 873 - There is to be only one male sponsor or one female sponsor or one of each.

• Must be at least 16 years of age. 
  • Or the pastor or minister has granted an exception for a just cause.
• Must be baptized Catholic who has completed the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation.
• May not be the parent of the child being baptized.
• If married, must be married in the Catholic Church, regularly attending Mass on Sunday, and living their Faith.
  • The two Godparents do not have to be married to one another.
• A baptized non-Catholic may not be a Godparent but may serve as a
  witness along with a Catholic Godparent.
• Non-baptized persons may not serve as witnesses or Godparent

To be a Godparent you must request a letter of good standing.

Requirements to be a Confirmation Sponsor

A sponsor must be:

• At least 16 years old and mature enough to assist you spiritually, intellectually, and morally. 
• A fully initiated Catholic (meaning that they have received the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation).
• A "practicing" Catholic (meaning that they are actively receiving the Sacraments and attending Mass and a registered parishioner at a Catholic Church).
  • To verify this information each sponsor must send to our Church a Letter of Good Standing. This is required to be a sponsor for Confirmation.

To be a Confirmation Sponsor you must request a letter of good standing.
